Our history
1876 until today…
1876
Humble beginnings
In 1876 Johann Josef Kerschgens sets up shop as a master locksmith. At his business address in Verbindungsstraße 1 – today Roderburgmühle – in Stolberg-Mühle, he also runs a hardware store and sells steel.
1905
The first steps into the future
After the death of Johann Josef Kerschgens in 1905, his sons take over the company and rename it “Gebr. Kerschgens”. They expand their father’s business and move it to a new location in Kupferstraße. The new core business of the Kerschgens brothers is iron construction. This marks the beginning of the Stolberg success story.
1940
Divided, but not separate
The company grows, demand is high and interests varied. The Kerschgens brothers split up their business to create two companies, Heinrich Kerschgens Stahlkonstruktions GmbH and Kerschgens Einzelhandel KG. Josef Kerschgens becomes a general partner, his daughter Sophie Carlson a partner. Kerschgens Einzelhandel KG moves into the railroad warehouse in Herrmann-Ritter-Straße.
1941
Reiner Kerschgens
It’s all in the family: Josef Kerschgens dies shortly after the split-up of the company. His son Reiner becomes the new general partner and managing director; he remains in the company until 2007.
1970
Manfred Kerschgens
New buildings, new management: Manfred Kerschgens joins the management in 1970 as an authorized officer.
1984
Heinz Herbort
Kerschgens welcomes Heinz Herbort as new authorized officer – he will go on to become an invaluable member of the Kerschgens family who is still on board today.
1988
The glow of success
Kerschgens expands its offering. In 1988 the company introduces flame-cutting as a new field of business. In the following years, it steadily broadens its range of products and services.
1994
Big, …
After five construction phases, the company premises in Stolberg reach their current size: 20,000 sqm of floor space on a property of 46,000 sqm. In the same year, Heinz Herbort becomes Managing Director.
1999-2005
… bigger, …
Between 1999 and 2005 Kerschgens acquires various companies, opens new locations and expands its product and service portfolio.
2006
… Kerschgens Werkstoffe & Mehr GmbH.
Kerschgens now has four company sites – Würselen, Stolberg, Bitburg and Trier – and changes its name to Kerschgens Werkstoffe & Mehr GmbH.
2013
Steel meets the modern era
No longer merely a “steel trader”, Kerschgens becomes the service provider in the steel industry. The company’s modern section steel line opens up a host of preprocessing possibilities. Kerschgens quickly makes a name for itself throughout Europe. Regular upgrades to premises, machines and services ensure that the company remains up to date. What started out as a hardware business has become an industrial service provider.
2021
Felix Herbort
Under the new Managing Director Felix Herbort, the company looks to the future with the “Kerschgens 2030” positioning process. As a sixth-generation family-owned company, Kerschgens feels a responsibility to uphold the principles of fairness, reliability and sustainability – towards its own employees, its customers and the planet.
2022
The family grows
On September 1, 2022 Kerschgens becomes the new owner of Carlier Blechbearbeitungs GmbH. This enables the company to establish a new business unit that offers sheet metal working up to and including the production of entire assemblies.
