Sustainability: A priority for Kerschgens

Green is our favorite color

Without sustainability, we have no future. That is why sustainability is more than just a phrase for Kerschgens – and we will prove it by reducing our CO2 output by at least 25% by 2030. But achieving this ambitious target will require serious and well-considered action. The two most effective levers of our strategy for more sustainability are reducing emissions and generating energy. We have already come a long way. Because as a family-owned company with deep roots in our home region, we have a responsibility to ensure that our operations are socially and ecologically sustainable. With our actions, we want to support the goal of the Paris Climate Accords to limit global warming to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels. And our efforts have already paid off: In early 2024, our environmental management system received the 14001:2015 certification.

We plan to generate at least 60% of our electricity with solar power by 2030 at the latest. To this end, we use modern battery banks that help us manage peak loads and extend the availability of solar-generated electricity into the night.

Our transition to battery-powered vehicles is also well underway. Charging stations on our premises and our popular e-bike leasing plan motivate our employees to switch to more sustainable options for their everyday mobility needs. Our own logistics fleet and trucks will also be replaced by electric vehicles, which will drastically reduce our fuel consumption.

To document and share our commitment to more sustainability, we joined the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) in 2022 and have registered our sustainability targets. Using internal controlling tools and external partners, we measure our emissions precisely and create verified reports detailing our CO2 output. Our efforts to date have not gone unnoticed. In September 2022, NORDWEST Handel AG’s Stahlverbund-PHOENIX selected Kerschgens as recipient of its 2022 Sustainability Award. Among other things, the jury rated the sustainability measures’ strategic significance, the transparency of their benefits and the measurability of target achievement. We are proud to have fulfilled, and continue to fulfill, 100% of these criteria.
